2. Thermal Expansion: Correcting Density for Temperature

The volume of liquid hydrocarbons changes predictably with temperature. To calculate temperature-compensated density:

Density_T = Density_15 * [1 - beta * (T - 15)]

Where:

  • Density_15 = Standard density at 15°C (kg/L)
  • beta = Thermal expansion coefficient (approximately 0.00095 per °C for diesel)
  • T = Measured temperature (°C)

Freight Impact Example:

A long-haul truck loads 800 liters of diesel at 35°C:

Density_35 = 0.835 * [1 - 0.00095 * (35 - 15)] = 0.819 kg/L

Actual Fuel Mass = 800 L * 0.819 kg/L = 655.2 kg

Comparing to standard 15°C conditions (800 * 0.835 = 668 kg), the thermal expansion reduces actual fuel mass by 12.8 kg.
